Richard meier architect5/1/2023 “It was a collaboration.” Translation: It took six fittings to get the scoop back, chain-stitch seams, and draping just right.Ĭocktails and a family-style dinner for 250 were served in a Meier-designed clear tent hung with semi-sheer white linen fabric panels that softened the angles and created a flattering light. “She knew exactly what she wanted,” Costa said. “Ana’s dress is perfect in its simplicity.” Sipping sparkling water further up the lawn, the designer of said double-silk column dress, Francisco Costa, the creative director for womenswear at Calvin Klein, revealed that the bride considered three different whites-ivory, white, and optic white-before settling on the medium shade. “It’s perfection,” noted Calvin Klein, a neighbor in East Hampton and a resident in a Meier building in New York’s West Village. In a clearing between tall oak trees, the wedding party walked along the rolling green lawn to Pachelbel’s Canon. The sun-dappled celebration unfolded gracefully as guests arrived at 4:00 p.m., greeted with punch, iced tea and a six-piece classical ensemble playing classic rock songs (Queen’s “Somebody To Love”). In charge of overseeing every last detail of the proceedings was Meier’s father, who designed the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, but joked that those projects and others of similarly iconic scope “were nothing compared to this wedding. On Saturday, Meier wed realtor Daniel Creighton, 30, at the Meier family home in East Hampton, New York, in what began in the early planning stages as “a little ceremony on the lawn,” but over the course of nine months assumed the proportions of a mini-blockbuster. The 29-year-old furniture designer loves clean lines and everything white, which comes in handy at a wedding. Once that is eliminated, the idea of opening the piazza to the river is a good one." The mayor's office said Alemanno hopes to complete the project before the end of his term in 2013.Ana Meier, daughter of legendary architect Richard Meier, has inherited the minimalist gene. "It's an improvement," says Meier, adding that "the reason that wall was there has to do with traffic and noise. The city plans to build a wide pedestrian area along the river and run the road underneath it. Mayor Alemmano has since changed his stance on the building and has agreed with Meier to modifications including drastically reducing the height of the wall between an open-air space outside the museum and a busy road along the Tiber river. The Mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno included in his campaign platform a promise to tear down the big travertine wall of Meier's Ara Pacis. White has been used in many architectural landmark buildings throughout history, including cathedrals and the white-washed villages of the Mediterranean region, in Spain, southern Italy and Greece. His work also reflects the influences of other designers such as Mies Van der Rohe and, in some instances, Frank Lloyd Wright and Luis Barragan (without the colour). Meier expanded many ideas evident in Le Corbusier's work, particularly the Villa Savoye and the Swiss Pavilion. Meier has built more using Corbusier's ideas than anyone, including Le Corbusier himself. Much of Meier's work builds on the work of architects of the early to mid-20th century, especially that of Le Corbusier and, in particular, Le Corbusier's early phase. Today, Richard Meier & Partners Architects has offices in New York and Los Angeles with current projects ranging from China and Tel Aviv to Paris and Hamburg. Some of his other notable commissions include museums such as the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia (1983), Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art in Spain (1995), and the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, California (1996) city halls in The Hague, The Netherlands (1995) and San Jose City Hall (2007) and commercial buildings including the reconstruction of City Tower in Prague, Czech Republic (2008). Though Meier was an acclaimed architect for many years, his design of the Getty Center, a massive museum complex in Los Angeles, California, which opened in 1997, catapulted his popularity into the mainstream. Early in his career, Meier worked with artists such as painter Frank Stella and favored structure that were white and geometric. In 1972, he was identified as one of The New York Five. Meier worked for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill briefly in 1959, and then for Marcel Breuer for three years, prior to starting his own practice in New York in 1963. A winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1984, some of his more iconic buildings include the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Richard Meier is an American abstract artist and architect, whose geometric designs make prominent use of the color white.
